About Us

The Spessart Highlanders

In autumn 2001 Uwe Diehm and some of his friends contacted Christian Schwab, the leader of the music-school Jam House in Marktheidenfeld, and asked him if there was a possibility of learning the Great Highland Bagpipe. Christian was surprised, but took an interest and began searching for a tutor. He knew of a piper called Achim Fuchs in Aschaffenburg and, after a few days' searching, Achim was found and agreed to teach a group. An article in the local newspaper attracted 16 people who wanted to learn the instrument.

In 2004 a second beginners' group was started at Marktheidenfeld and, since 2006, there has been tuition in Aschaffenburg with a third group. In 2009 we were lucky to meet Yvonne B├╝ttner, a drum teacher (Diploma) who has build up a drum corps, and which is still growing. The Spessart Highlanders wear Clan Macewan tartan and are the only Pipes and Drums in lower Franconia. The Spessart Highlanders have made many trips to Scotland to visit their twin band, Blairgowrie, Rattray & District Pipe Band.

On 08.12.2010 the band called "eV Spessart Highlanders" and this was the founding meeting of the association. The number of members had risen to more than 35 players. However, there were many differences of opinion within the association. The band in 2013 was on the verge of dissolution.

In 2014, the band has been completely restructured and raised. There are new goals and challenges which have the Spessart Highlanders set.

Blairgowrie Pipe Band

The current band was instigated in 1970 as a result of a chance meeting between two pipers and a drummer. The drummer commented that they would make better use of their time by reviving the town's pipe band. The band was given the name Blairgowrie, Rattray & District Pipe Band.

The band wears Clan Macpherson's bonnet, Glengarry badges and kilt pins and the old red Macpherson tartan. In 2004 Allan Proctor approached the band with great interest and offered to give some support. The band has won many awards. including the pipe band shield at the Braemar Gathering in 1995 and the drummer shield at Newtonmore in 2008.

The band has had many trips overseas to visit their twin band: the Spessart Highlanders in Aschaffenburg, Germany. The Spessart's have also had many trips to Blairgowrie. Blairgowrie and Rattray district pipe band would like to thank all of its supporters and band members of the past and present for keeping the band going for so many years.
